Autocade is an international car cyclopædia that’s geographically unbiased, carefully edited for enthusiasts and media who want a quick, accurate reference. There is a greater emphasis on models produced after 1970.

Inside Autocade

JAC Jiayue A5

JAC Jiayue A5 (A432). 2019 to date (prod. n/a). 5-door sedan. F/F, 1499 cm³ (I4 DOHC). A leap forward for JAC with a stylish liftback, with muscular, sporting appearance. Nice materials inside, with clear 10·4-inch LCD display and leather seats, and well equipped. Wheelbase at 2,760 mm, sizeable for the segment and price; also one of the wider cars among its competitors. Poor low-end torque and performance generally, with 1·5 turbo mated to a CVT. Related to JAC iC5 EV, and twinned with the Sol A5. Exported to some countries as JAC J7.

Manufacturing location: China

Marque: JAC | Model: JAC Jiayue | Predecessor: JAC Heyue (B18)

Honda Accord (1998–2003)

1998 Honda Accord.jpg

Honda Accord. 1998–2003 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door saloon. F/F, 1590, 1850, 1997 cm³ petrol, 1994 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2157 cm³ (I4 DOHC). German-designed, British-built (at Swindon) European-market Accord was supposed to be the perfect car to for Honda to take on premium mid-sizers such as Audi A4. As a gamble, it didn’t really work, with this generation forgotten apart from Type R model. Same suspension as other Accords of this generation. Conventional, conservative sedan and hatchback (coupé was US model, imported), wider than Japanese model and narrower than American one; and shorter than both. Rover turbodiesel option.

Manufacturing location: Swindon, England

Marque: Honda | Model: Honda Accord | Predecessor: Honda Accord (1993–8) | Successor: Honda Accord (2002–8)

Lexus

Luxury brand from Toyota, with first models released 1989. Initially the Lexus range was made up of models that were also sold as Toyotas in the home market, including a Camry hardtop and a rebadged Soarer. Highly successful in the US, less so in Europe. Sold on refinement (Toyota Celsior-based LS was quieter than any Mercedes-Benz or Rolls-Royce), quality (even minutiæ such as steering wheel stitch density was looked into) and good value (on the basis that even rich people buying luxury cars would like a bargain). Now fully established, Lexus even launched in Japan in the 2000s, and began having models exclusive to its range.
